What is SEO?

POSTED BY on Feb 14 under Uncategorized

SEO is the acronym for search engine optimization. It is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine like Google. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for online users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. Typically sites that show up in the top 10 on the search results page is most likely to be clicked by a user.

SEO is the technical part of Web marketing. It helps in the promotion of sites and at the same time requires some technical knowledge on how it works. SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing Web pages or whole sites in order to make them more search engine-friendly. This helps in getting higher ranking in search results.

A basic truth that wesite owners don’t realize at most times is even if you do all that are necessary to do technically, it does not automatically guarantee a top rating for your site immediately but if you neglect the basic rules, this certainly will have an impact to the position of the site on search results. By setting realistic goals – i.e to get into the top 30 results in Google for a particular keyword, rather than be the number one for 10 keywords in 5 search engines, you will feel more satisfied with the results and metrics on the click through ratios would look much better.

Although SEO helps increase the traffic to your website, it needs to be understood that it is not a total substitute for advertising. Of course, you can be included in paid search results for given keywords but the idea behind SEO is to get top placement due to the relevance to a particular search term and not because you pay.

SEO can be a 30-minute job or a permanent activity. Sometimes it is enough to do some generic SEO in order to get high in search engines but if you want to be at the top, you need to pay special attention to SEO and devote significant amounts of time and effort to it. Even if you plan to do some basic SEO, it is essential that you have a basic understanding of how search engines work and which items are most important in SEO.
